The Gift of a Birthday: Celebrating Who They Are, Not Just How Old They Are

Birthdays in our home aren’t just about getting older—they’re about honoring the unique light God placed in our children. Today, our sweet Lucy turns six, and while she’s growing taller and wiser by the minute, it’s not just the number that makes us pause and celebrate—it’s who she is becoming.

We still do some presents, yes. But the heart of our tradition is rooted in presence over presents. We believe that the best gift we can give our children is the gift of memories—of feeling seen, cherished, and celebrated for who they are at every stage.

So today we’re celebrating not just the day Lucy was born, but the joy she brings into our lives every single day since. Her curiosity, her creativity, the way she sings worship songs while playing with her dolls, how she sets up entire tea parties with tickets and signage. The way she folds laundry with a smile or bursts into storytelling mode mid-breakfast. These are the gifts she gives us.

And as she blows out her candles, we say prayers over her life. We pray for her heart to stay tender, for her courage to grow strong, for her light to never dim in a world that can sometimes feel dark.

Because birthdays aren’t just mile-markers. They’re sacred pauses. Moments to stop and reflect on how far we’ve come—and to whisper gratitude for the beautiful soul entrusted to us.

Happy Birthday, Lucy. You are loved beyond measure. You are light in its purest form. And today, we celebrate you.
