The “Tooty” Shapes Lesson

There are days when homeschooling feels like magic—and sometimes, that magic sounds a little like… tooty. 😆

Lucy and I were working through a math lesson on two-dimensional vs. three-dimensional shapes. Every time I read the phrase “2D,” she started giggling uncontrollably. I kept going, but her laughter just kept growing. Finally, I paused and asked, “What is so funny?”

She looked at me wide-eyed and said, “I just can’t believe they call it tooty!”

Cue the laughter from both of us. She wasn’t hearing two-D—she was hearing tooty. And once we heard it that way, there was no un-hearing it. We laughed so hard we had to take a break before even touching the 3D shapes. (Which, thankfully, did not sound like a bodily noise).

Moments like these are such a gift. Not only because they remind me how joyful learning can be—but because they remind me to slow down and see the world through Lucy’s lens. One where math isn’t just numbers and shapes—it’s giggles and curiosity and connection.

It’s in these silly, unexpected pauses that the real learning happens—not just about geometry, but about joy, humor, and the beautiful bond we’re building as we grow and learn together.

And that, my friends, is what makes even a “tooty” lesson one to treasure.
