The Power of a Plan: How One Simple System Sparked Big Growth

Sometimes all a kid needs is a clear path and a little ownership.

Recently, Anderson had been walking through a tough season—struggling with making good choices and responding truthfully in certain situations. After some heartfelt conversations with his mom, Emily, we decided to put a plan in place. Not a punishment, but a purpose. Together, we came up with a system designed to give him the accountability, structure, and self-worth he was craving—something that could work at both homes and help him feel like a capable, contributing part of the family.

We created a simple daily chart:

✅ Workout (non-negotiable for his body and mindset)

✅ Choose 3 chores (not always the same ones each day)

✅ Pick a brain or body activity instead of defaulting to screens

And to help him stay on track, we even set reminders on his phone—little nudges throughout the day to help him feel capable, supported, and equipped to succeed. (Yes, we even included emojis! 💪🧼💬)

Visual reminders = empowerment!

Yesterday was his first full day using this system… and it was amazing. I couldn’t believe how well he did—but more than that, I was moved by the thoughtful touches he added all on his own.

While unloading the dishwasher, he didn’t just put away my coffee mug—he placed it right next to the Nespresso machine, “because I knew you’d want it in the morning.” He saw the cats needed their bedtime snack and took care of it, then made sure to let me know so they wouldn’t get double-fed. He made smart choices, took initiative, and had a great attitude through it all—no grumbling, no shortcuts, just integrity and even a few jokes.

I made sure to tell him last night and again this morning how proud I was. Not just of what he did, but how he did it—with a kind heart, a steady spirit, and a real desire to be helpful. I told him that his effort made a real difference and reminded him that he is such a valuable part of this family.

The look on his face said everything. It wasn’t boastful pride—it was the kind of quiet, grounded pride that comes from knowing you matter.

Now listen, I know this doesn’t mean every day from here on out will be this magical. I know there will be days with grumbles and groans, and maybe some eye rolls thrown in for good measure. He’s human. And that’s okay.

But this day? This was a victory.

A true, full-hearted, well-earned win.

And we’re going to celebrate it. 💛
