When Your Child’s Prayer Stops You in Your Tracks

Last night, Lucy prayed:

“Dear God, thank You for dinner. I mean, my dad made it, but really YOU made it, so thank You for doing that for us.”

I had to pause for a moment just to take it in.

As a parent, I know how easy it is to question ourselves—to feel guilt over whether we’re doing enough or doing it right. But in that moment, I felt a wave of peace. I knew, deep down, I’m on the right track in raising her to walk with God.

Lucy wasn’t reciting a prayer she thought she was “supposed” to say. She wasn’t checking a box or trying to impress anyone. She was talking to Him—really talking. And at just six years old, she has already grasped something profound: that her earthly dad may have cooked the food, but her Heavenly Father is the One who provided it.

That’s the kind of heart I pray she carries forever—a heart that notices God in every good thing.

It’s in these moments that I’m reminded: faith doesn’t have to be complicated. It’s as simple as recognizing the Giver behind the gift.
