Lucy’s First Horse Lesson: Courage, Tears, and Triumph

Today was a milestone for Lucy—her very first horse lesson! 🐴✨

One of the reasons I wanted Lucy to start riding lessons is because she feels emotions in such a big, beautiful way. Something that might not seem like a big deal to others can weigh heavily on her heart. And sure enough, we saw this play out in the arena today.

Her trainer gently asked Lucy to give her horse a little “kick” to signal it was time to move. Lucy followed instructions, but almost immediately her eyes welled with tears. She was overwhelmed by the idea of kicking an animal, even gently. To her, it felt wrong.

That’s when her trainer’s wisdom shined through. With the softest voice and kindest heart, she explained what “kicking” really meant—more of a tap, a way to communicate, not to harm. Then she walked Lucy and her horse to the barn’s open doors, where they could stand together in peace, looking out at the other horses grazing. It was such a tender moment, exactly what Lucy needed to work through her feelings.

And work through them she did.

By the end of her lesson, Lucy’s confidence blossomed. Once she understood the technique wasn’t cruel, she was able to use it bravely—getting her horse to trot, turn, and even walk backwards! Her smile said it all.

But her growth didn’t stop there. She brushed and helped prep her horse at the start, proudly assisted with saddling, and when the lesson ended, she led her horse back to the barn, unsaddled her, and returned her to her stall. From start to finish, Lucy was immersed in the full experience.

And despite that tough emotional moment, Lucy absolutely loved it. In fact, her biggest takeaway was: “Can I do this every day?”

This beautiful beginning wouldn’t have been possible without her trainer’s patience, knowledge, and gift for teaching children. What could have been a discouraging moment turned into one of growth and triumph. I am so grateful for the people God places in our lives to guide our children with such wisdom and care.

Here’s to the start of a brand-new adventure for Lucy—one filled with courage, compassion, and confidence. 💕🐎
