Homeschooling is one of the greatest joys of my life—and one of the hardest careers I’ve ever taken on. People sometimes assume it’s “easier” than working outside the home, but let me tell you, the amount of patience required could rival that of a monk. Some days, I joke that it should count as an Olympic sport.
One thing that has truly transformed our days is something as simple as pressing “play” on a playlist: classical music.

When Lucy and I sit down to study, the moment those strings, pianos, or flutes begin, I can feel both of us shift. She’s more relaxed, more focused, and more willing to stick with a challenge. And me? I’m calmer, more centered, and far less likely to let little frustrations ruffle me. It’s like the music gives us both a deep breath before diving in.
And it’s not just my imagination—science actually backs this up. Studies have shown that listening to classical music can:
Reduce stress and anxiety by lowering cortisol levels.
Improve concentration and memory—some even call it the “Mozart effect.”
Enhance creativity by helping the brain make new connections.
Lower blood pressure and heart rate, creating a sense of calm.
Boost learning and comprehension, especially when paired with reading or studying.
It’s no wonder that when our homeschool lessons feel overwhelming, turning on Bach or Mozart can help bring us back to a place of peace. It doesn’t erase the hard work, but it makes the atmosphere lighter and our hearts more open to learning together.
Classical music has become our quiet ally. A reminder that even in the chaos of homeschooling—or life in general—there’s beauty, balance, and rhythm waiting to guide us back to center.
