When I think back to the time I shared a simple post celebrating Lucy’s success finishing third grade, and starting 4th, I’m still amazed at the contrast in reactions. Many moms were incredibly kind and supportive, while others—well, let’s just say their responses were… less than gracious. I was stunned at how quickly a moment of joy could spark jealousy, criticism, or comparison.

He said something that hit me right between the eyes:
But this weekend, I heard a sermon that brought it all into crystal-clear focus. Pastor Josh Howerton from Lakepointe Church in Texas preached a message called “What Happens When You Die? These Two Questions Decide Everything” as part of the Run to Win series. If you haven’t listened to him yet, do yourself a favor and find this one—his words have a way of shaking your soul awake.
“Run the race that’s marked out for YOU.”
How often do we glance at the next lane over and wonder why someone else’s race looks easier? Why their kids seem to excel effortlessly, or their house stays cleaner, or their marriage seems smoother? That comparison trap is one of the enemy’s favorite weapons. It steals joy, distorts truth, and distracts us from the unique calling God has placed on our lives.
Whoever it is that you’re comparing yourself to—you would make a lousy second version of them. But you are the best version of who God made you to be. You have gifts, talents, and passions that were divinely designed for your race.
And that’s the message we need to instill in our children. I don’t ever want Lucy—or any child—to believe their worth comes from being “better” than someone else. I want her to know that she was created for a purpose. She has gifts to develop, work to do, and a God to glorify.
We are not called to run someone else’s race—we are called to run our own with perseverance and faith.
So whether it’s academics, sports, careers, or even parenting—let’s stop glancing sideways. Let’s lift our eyes upward and forward, running the race God marked just for us. And when we teach our children to do the same, they won’t just chase success—they’ll chase purpose.
If you want to hear the message that inspired this reflection, you can find it on Lakepointe Church’s YouTube channel or podcast feed under “Run to Win | What Happens When You Die? These 2 Questions Decide Everything” by Pastor Josh Howerton. I also highly recommend their Live Free Podcast, which dives even deeper into each sermon in a relaxed, morning-show style. Both are rich with biblical wisdom and practical encouragement to help you stay focused on your God-given race.
