Faith + Family, Lightbulb Moments

God’s Birthday Celebration

The other day, Lucy turned to me completely out of the blue and said,

“Mom, I don’t remember the storm on your birthday.”

I smiled and asked, “Why should there have been a storm, honey?”

She answered so sweetly, “You know! Because that’s how God celebrates. With all the thunder and lightning.”

It took everything in me not to melt right then and there. Her thought process—her faith-filled imagination—was so pure, so childlike, and so full of heart. What made it even more meaningful was that she remembered something I told her over two years ago, during a time when she was scared of storms. I had said, “Storms are just God’s way of celebrating—maybe even someone’s birthday.” And now, all this time later, she carried that truth in her heart and offered it back to me as a gift.

I told her, “That is such a beautiful idea. But you know what? God can celebrate in all kinds of ways. He knows I love my family, and flowers, and beautiful skies—and that’s exactly what He gave me on my birthday.”

These are the moments. The little windows into how a child sees God and the world. And they leave a lasting light.
